The Pull of More
We can spend a lot of time thinking about what would make our lives better. We tell ourselves we’ll be content once a few things fall into place … but getting what we wanted doesn’t always (or really even often) bring the relief we expected. Before long, we’re looking for that next thing that will be the thing, and the people and things we already care about can get less and less of our attention.
It’s worth asking why enough seems so hard to reach. We suppose that somehow that next purchase, success, or bit of praise will fulfill these longings like those that came before failed to do. God understands these hopes and the strain of trying to find them. They’re rooted in desires that are fundamentally fulfilled in something much grander, much more glorious that what we typically pursue. Bringing these yearnings to the One who ultimately completes them sets us on a path that can lead to true contentment.

His love calls us out of darkness into light, out of fear into confidence, and out of self-centeredness into intentional, sacrificial care for others. When we abide in His love, we not only find assurance of our own salvation by His unmerited favor, but we also become witnesses to and agents of His grace into the world around us. The words of John invite us to be shaped by God’s love so lavishly that it flows through us in every relationship and sphere of life.
